There were more M1 Carbines made than Garands. This is because the Carbine was lighter than Garands. Paratroopers, pilots, tankers, and officers needed a lighter gun to carry around.

Over six million M1 Carbines were made between 1942 and 1945. In mid 1944, the supply of Carbines exceeded the demand, so all but two contracts that were made during the production period were cancelled. Most of the Carbines used by Americans during WWII were used in Pacific European countries, and North Africa. The M1 Carbine was the most produced weapon during WWII. When people brought back carbines to America, they got updated. Carbines today are much lighter than they were in WWII. During the Vietnam War, the M1 Carbine was the chosen weapon by our enemy. "If we didn't have the M1 Carbine, we might not have won World War II", Troy Hansen, former U.S. military.
