The M1 Garand
|
The United States first adopted the Garand in 1936. It was designed by John Cantius Garand. The first M1 Garand was manufactured at Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. When shooting the M1 Garand, you don't need to do anything in between each shot to reload, making this gun unique. The clip was loaded through the top of the gun, which kept the design clean and smooth. This gun was the original semi-automatic gun with a wood stock. There was a slot in the stock for a sling. The sling was pinned to the slot by a metal tube that held gun oil for maintenance. The United States Marine Corps was completely switched to using the M1 Garand mid-way through WWII. In September 1937, Springfield Armory built 100 rifles per day, and by January 1941, they could build 600 rifles a day. The M1 Garand was the main service rifle of the United States Army until 1957.
